10 Reasons Why an Internship is Important to All Students Career

Internship is defined as “any official or formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession.” The most important segment of internships is that they transform classrooms theoretical knowledge into practical applications and skills developed in professional or community settings.
Internships are the best and proven way to gain relevant knowledge, skills, and experience while establishing important connections in the field. They are also a way to get your feet wet and find out if a specific field is something you could see yourself doing full-time.

On July 26th, 2018 for National Intern Day SUNY has hosted a video competition to celebrate the unique internships students participate in throughout the system.

Many more opportunities are coming along every day, providing students with experiences in their particular field can lead to personal and professional growth. The participation in and benefit of being an intern, we put together a list of reasons why all students should intern.

Why should you intern?

1. Application of education and career exposures. Internships are a great way to transform classroom knowledge to real-world experience. Learning the specialized skills of a particular field, transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, and computer proficiency are also obtained in an internship, fully preparing interns to enter the workforce upon graduation.

2. Gain valuable experience and increase marketability. An internship gives you experience in the field you want to pursue. This give individuals an edge over other candidates when applying for jobs, it prepares them for what to expect in their field and increases confidence in their work. Even though the experience of trying something new is extremely beneficial.

3. Develop Your Professional Network. Networking is an exchange of information between people, with the ultimate goal of establishing your professional network. Internships provide a great networking to meet professionals in the career field you want to pursue, as well as other interns who have similar interests

4. Receive financial compensation: Many of the internships are paid which means you can gain valuable work experience. Making money at the same time to fund your college tuition and expenses.

5. Professionalism. Internships are more than just about earning credit, getting a grade, or making money; can provide soft skills needed in the workplace and in leadership positions. Skills include communication, leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork can all be learned through an internship and utilized beyond that experience.

6. Learn how a professional workplace operates. In the working world, it’s not all about, you may read about how organizations thrive and function in textbooks. Internships help students learn from the people around you, ask queries, and also all about workplace culture, employee relations, and leadership structure, which would help them onboard in their professional job with more ease even though if they dont had professional experience.

7. Build your resume. Most organizations and jobs that you apply during pursuing or after completion of graduation, they want employees to have some sort of professional experience, even for entry-level jobs. Experience is the perfect way to enhance your resume through relevant experiences.

8. Gain professional feedback. Internships allow for feedback from professionals and others who are established in the field, and offer a unique learning opportunity that you may not have again as a working adult. The mistakes you make as an intern and the many things that you won’t know will help you to learn more. While lecturers and teachers will prepare you for the theoretical side of your field and hands-on projects.

9. Learn from others. As you know – you’re interning to learn skills, after all – but don’t forget to observe others in their job role to learn the ins and outs of different positions. Keep observing others, be like a sponge and soak up all the information you can during your internship – it will benefit you in the long run.

10. Opportunity to learn about yourself. Everyone feels excited and passionate while internship, there’s a silver-lining to be found if you didn’t enjoy the job: you’ll know what you don’t like.
